【Product Details】Japanese is built on a layered writing system of hiragana, katakana, and kanji.
While complex to learn, this structure has shaped a culture where meaning and symbols are deeply connected.

This product takes inspiration from elementary school kanji drills—often the first entry point into learning Japanese.
It expands the act of learning beyond language, positioning it as a way to understand urban culture.

The kanji used here are not basic vocabulary.
Each character is reinterpreted through its meaning and origin to reflect the nature of Kabukicho—
pleasure and labor, order and chaos, the ordinary and the extraordinary.
By translating the city into symbols, the project proposes a fundamental literacy for reading the city itself.

“KABUKICHO FIRST GRADER” does not refer to age or experience.
It describes the moment one begins to understand Kabukicho.
Through a familiar learning format, it serves as an entry point into the complexity of the city.

日本語は、ひらがな・カタカナという二つの音節文字と、漢字によって構成される、複層的な言語体系を持っています。
この構造は学習の難しさを生む一方で、意味と記号が密接に結びついた、独自の文化を形づくってきました。
本プロダクトは、日本語学習の入口として多くの人が経験する「小学生向け漢字ドリル」に着想を得ています。
学ぶという行為を、言語の習得にとどめず、都市文化を理解するための視点へと拡張することを目的に制作されました。
ここで用いられる漢字は、単なる基礎語彙ではありません。
その意味や成り立ちを手がかりに、歌舞伎町という都市の性質を想起させるよう再解釈されています。
歓楽と労働、秩序と混沌、日常と非日常。
相反する要素が交差する街の構造を、漢字という記号に置き換えることで、都市を「読む」ための基礎的なリテラシーを提示します。
「KABUKICHO FIRST GRADER」は、年齢や経験を示す言葉ではありません。
歌舞伎町を理解し始める、その最初の段階に立つ人を指しています。
親しみのある学習形式を通して、複雑な都市・歌舞伎町に向き合うための入口となることを目指しています。
